Would You Live In A Haunted House?

Apparently, many home buyers aren’t so spooked by haunted houses. 32 percent of potential home buyers said they would be willing to purchase a home that is known to be haunted, according to a new Realtor.com survey. Although they may be willing to cohabitate with ghostly companions, the home buyers expect a discount of at least 51 percent off the home’s market value. Regardless of the price cuts, current homeowners still sometimes find that they can’t sell a listing that’s haunted.

Ma Barker House
Oklawaha, Florida
List Price: $1,000,000
Built in 1930 on Lake Weir, the Ma Barker house is famous for being the location where the longest shootout in FBI history took place in 1935. Kate “Ma” Barker and her son Fred stood against the FBI during a gang shootout. To this day, the home is still riddled with bullet holes from the shooting. The bullet holes have been covered and patched, but are still easily visible throughout the house. Ma, Fred, and their gang were all shot dead in the home during the shootout. The listing price includes all the furnishings; to the bed where Ma Barker was shot to the bullets lodged in the walls and chairs.

Buxton Inn
Granville, Ohio
List Price: $3,900,000
The Buxton Inn, originally built in 1812, is comprised of the main building and 9 other properties for a total of 10 buildings, five of which are operating as a bed and breakfast. Reports of paranormal activity at the Buxton Inn date all the way back to 1920, where it was believed that the original homeowner’s ghost, Orrin Granger, still remained. Although named the most haunted “Inn” in America, it is said to host some of the friendliest spirits.

The Maplecroft Estate
Fall River, Massachusetts

The Maplecroft Estate, former residence of axe murderer Lizzie Borden, has been on the market several times over the last few years. Built in 1889, the Maplecroft Estate has 14 rooms including a billiards room, 6 fireplaces, original parquet floors, and tin ceilings. Lizzie bought this home after she was acquitted a year after her parent’s brutal murders and lived there until the day she died. Since Lizzie died in 1927 (with her funeral being held at Maplecroft) over the years, the house has been through multiple owners, and many price reductions.
